AI Robotics could have stumbled upon a gold mine here by developing a robot which is smart enough to cook meals, go shopping, perform all the necessary house chores without nagging you to help and the ability to even give massages after you have had a long day at work. The company has thus dubbed this new robot "Perfect Woman", at least from most males' point of view. I myself think that the claims by AI Robotics are exaggerated as the field robotics surely has not advanced to such a state so soon? Even if it were real, you're probably better off with a real flesh-and-blood lady in your arms since she'll cost less than such an advanced robot.
"I am talking about loving relationships about 40 years from now," David Levy, author of the book "Love + sex with robots", told AFP at an international conference held last week at the University of Maastricht in the south-east of the country
"... when there are robots that have also emotions, personality, consciousness. They can talk to you, they can make you laugh. They can ... say they love you just like a human would say 'I love you', and say it as though they mean it
Robots as sex toys should already be on the market within five years, predicted Levy, "a sort of an upgrade of the sex dolls on sale now.
These would have electronic speech and sensors that make them utter "nice sounds" when a human caresses their "erogenous zones".
But to build robots as real partners would take a bit longer, with conversation skills being the main obstacle for developers.
Scientists were working on artificial personality, emotion and consciousness, said Levy, and some robots already appear lifelike.
"But for loving relationships -- that is something completely different. In loving relationships there are many more things that are important. And the most difficult of all is conversation.
"You want your robot to be able to talk to you about what is interesting to you. You want a partner who has some similar interest to you, who talks to you in a manner that pleases you, who has a similar sense of humour to you."
The field of human-computer conversation is crucial to building robots with whom humans could fall in love, but is lagging behind other areas of development, said the author.
"I am sure it will (happen.) In 40 years ... perhaps sooner. You will find robots, conversation partners, that will talk to you and you will get as much pleasure from it as talking to another human. I am sure of it."
Levy's bombshell thesis, whose publication has had a ripple-effect way beyond the scientific community, gives rise to a number of complicated ethical and relationship questions.
British scholar Dylan Evans pointed out the paradox inherent to any relationship with a robot.
"What is absolutely crucial to the sentiment of love, is the belief that the love is neither unconditional nor eternal.
"Robots cannot choose you, they cannot reject you. That could become very boring, and one can imagine the human becoming cruel against his defenseless partner", said Evans.
A robot could conceivably be programmed with a will of its own and the ability to reject his human partner, he said, "but that would be a very difficult robot to sell".
Some warn against being overhasty.
"Let us not exaggerate the possibilities!" said Dutch researcher Vincent Wiegel of the Technological University of the eastern town of Delft.
"Today, the artificial intelligence we are able to create is that of a child of one year of age."
But Levy is unyielding. He is convinced it will happen, and predicts many societal benefits.
"There are many millions of people in the world who have nobody. They might be shy or they might have some psychological hang-ups or psycho-sexual hang-ups, they might have personality problems, they might be ugly ...
"There will always be many millions of people who cannot make normal satisfactory relationships with humans, and for them the choice is not: 'would I prefer a relationship with a human or would I prefer a relationship with a robot?' -- the choice is no relationship at all or a relationship with a robot."
They might even become human-to-human relationship savers, he predicted.
"Certainly there will be some existing human-human relationships where one partner might say to the other partner: 'if you have sex with a robot I'm leaving you'.
"There will be others who say: 'when you go on your business trip please take your robot because I happen to worry about the red light district'."

As a relatively new discipline, much of the work in biomedical engineering consists of research and development, covering an array of fields: bioinformatics, medical imaging, image processing, physiological signal processing, biomechanics, biomaterials and bioengineering, systems analysis, 3-D modeling, etc. Examples of concrete applications of biomedical engineering are the development and manufacture of biocompatible prostheses, medical devices, diagnostic devices and imaging equipment such as MRIs and EEGs, and pharmaceutical
The use of cluster bombs
1. Why cluster bombs are so harmfull
1.1. Each cluster bomb is composed of 200 to 700 bomblets. When each bomblet explodes it fragments into about 300 pieces of jagged steel - sending out virtual blizzards of deadly shrapnel. People are decapitated, arms, legs, hands and feet are severed from their bodies - anyone and anything alive in the immediate vicinity is shredded into a bloody mess.
1.2. Cluster bombs cause damage over a very large and imprecise area. Once released from a U.S. Air Force or Navy jet, cluster bombs fall for a pre-set amount of time or distance before their dispensers open, spreading the bomblets widely so they can effectively slaughter people over a wide area. The wide dispersal pattern of cluster munitions makes them difficult to target accurately.
1.3. Each cluster bomblet is activated by an internal fuze, and is set to explode above ground, on impact, or to be time-delayed - that is, they can be made into time bombs or mines. The smaller bombs are designed to explode near the time of impact. But since 5% to 30% fail to explode at the time set for them, unexploded bombs litter every target area, silent and nondescript. Until picked up by an unfortunate child or accidentally kicked by a passerby. In this way they become hidden killers, blending into their surroundings like land mines. And over time cluster bombs become more unstable - they explode more easily.
Because of their high failure rate, cluster munitions leave large numbers of hazardous, explosive duds, a great many unexploded "dud" submunitions that become de facto antipersonnel landmines that may cause injury or death to civilians long after the war is over… (

Ethanol: Rumor vs. RealityRumor #1: Increased ethanol production has dramatically increased consumer food prices.Reality: The impact of ethanol on food prices has been greatly exaggerated.First, retail food products such as cereals, snack foods and beverages contain relatively little corn. For example, a standard box of corn flakes contains approximately 10 ounces of corn. Even when corn is priced at $4 per bushel, a box of corn flakes contains less than a nickel’s worth of corn (Source: U.S. Departmentment of Agriculture Economic Research Service). According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, labor costs account for 38 cents of every dollar a consumer spends on food. Packaging, transportation, energy, advertising and profits account for 24 cents of the consumer food dollar. Just 19 cents of every consumer dollar can be attributed to the actual price of food inputs. Second, food prices have not increased proportionately with corn prices. The U.S. Commerce Department reports that from January 2006 to March 2007, corn prices nearly doubled but consumer food costs increased only 2.1 percent. This percentage increase is less than the 25-year average CPI of 2.9 percent. So what does influence retail food prices? One recent study suggests that energy prices have twice the impact on retail food prices that grain prices do (Source: John Urbanchuk, LECG, LCC, June 2007). Over the past two and a half years, increases in crude oil prices have added an additional dollar per gallon to the price of regular gasoline. Americans consume about 140 billion gallons of gasoline each year, so a dollar per gallon price increase equates to a $140 billion impact. Seven billion bushels of corn each year is used for food and feed purposes, so an increase of $1 in the price of corn results in a $7 billion impact on prices consumers pay (Source: Acting USDA Secretary Chuck Conner, U.S. Consumer Federation Address, Sept 28, 2007).
Rumor # 2: As current ethanol production continues to grow, the U.S. will not be able to meet the demands of global food and feed markets.Reality: A sad reality of world hunger is that it generally due to problems with food access, not food production.According to the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization, the most likely causes of hunger are a lack of infrastructure and access to capital – not food scarcity. Furthermore, U.S. farmers have easily met all demands for U.S. corn from foreign markets. Even though corn use for ethanol has risen dramatically over the past several years, American corn growers continue to serve as the world’s top exporter of corn. USDA’s 2008 forecast predicts that U.S. corn exports will increase by $600 million due to strong foreign demand and reduced competition. There is not a direct relationship between commodities and food as some might assume. Both corn and soybeans are used primarily in the production of meat through feed for livestock and not used in actual retail food products. The amount of field corn used for human food processing (starch, sweetener and cereal) ranges between 5 percent and 8 percent of total corn usage. Also, corn demand for food processing markets has been flat for 15 years (Source: USDA, Pro Exporter Network). Finally, a high-quality feed product known as “distillers grains” is produced as a co-product of ethanol production. The U.S. exports large amounts of distillers grains annually. In 2006/2007, ethanol plants produced more than 12 million metric tons of distillers grains. This product is fed to livestock and poultry, helping to replace corn that can then be used for other purposes. It is estimated that distillers grains displaced more than 500 million bushels of corn from feed rations in 2006, allowing that corn to be used for other uses (Source: www.foodandfuelamerica.com).
Rumor #3: There won’t be enough corn to continue the strong growth in the ethanol industry.Reality: Thanks to continued increases in yields and ethanol processing efficiency, farmers are expected to be able to meet rising demand for corn. The amount of corn farmers can grow per acre has quadrupled in the last five decades – from 40 bushels per acre in 1950 to 160 bushels per acre in 2004. If yields continue to increase at the rate of the last 10 years, this average will reach 180 bushels by 2015. An increase of just two bushels per acre results in an additional 150 million bushels of corn, which can produce 420 million gallons of ethanol (Source: National Corn Growers Association). At the same time, technology improvements will mean that we can squeeze more out of each bushel of corn. The average ethanol conversion rate today is 2.8 gallons per bushel, up from 2.5 gallons per bushel several years ago. The conversion rate may soon be as high as 3 gallons per bushel because of emerging processing technologies.
Rumor #4: Ethanol supporters claim it is the total answer to our nation’s energy independence.Reality: Instead of seeing ethanol as a silver bullet, supporters describe it as a step in the right direction for reducing our nation’s dependence on foreign oil. While imperfect, today’s renewable fuels create a necessary foundation for future renewable fuel technologies that will offer even greater environmental and economic benefits. Just as the early biplanes were necessary first steps toward transcontinental air travel, today’s renewable fuels sector is a first step down a road that supporters believe will ultimately lead to energy independence. Some critics of renewable fuels may raise issues that are important to address. However, many of the concerns being raised on a national level today mimic those raised decades ago when ethanol was first emerging as a fuel option in Minnesota. Our experience has shown that ethanol can provide a real-world boost to our economy and our environment even though it has practical limitations and technical obstacles like any other energy option.
Rumor #5: Ethanol contributes little to our nation’s energy security.Reality: Ethanol makes a significant and growing contribution today by reducing our need to purchase foreign energy. In 2005, the use of ethanol reduced America’s trade deficit by $8.7 billion and thereby eliminated the need to import 170 million barrels of oil (Source: Renewable Fuels Association). As encouraging as this statistic may be, there is still need for further improvement. Right now, the U.S. imports 65 percent of its petroleum needs. By 2025, the Energy Information Agency (EIA) projects the U.S. will import 71 percent of its petroleum. A major portion of this petroleum is expected to come from the volatile Middle East, where much of the remaining known petroleum reserves exist.
Rumor #6: Ethanol is heavily subsidized in comparison to other fuels.Reality: Subsidies of renewable fuels are modest when compared with the subsidies directed to fossil fuels. It is important to compare “apples to apples” when discussing fuel subsidies. According to the Government Accountability Office (GAO), the U.S. has spent more than $130 billion over the last three decades in subsidies to the oil industry. Add to this the amount of money that the U.S. spends to maintain a major presence in the Middle East, and you begin to see the “embedded” cost in our gasoline coming from the oil imported from this region. Ethanol has received government subsidies as well. However, with the rise in today’s market price of corn, agricultural subsidies in their current form will be reduced from more than $10 billion/year to approximately $2 billion/year. Even by factoring in the current cost of the U.S. excise tax credit to gasoline blenders, which amounts to $3 billion/year, the subsidy level is greatly reduced from previous norms.
Rumor #7: It takes more energy to produce a gallon of ethanol than you get from it.Reality: Most studies show ethanol to have a positive net energy balance, while all studies show gasoline has a net negative energy balance.Reality: Most studies show ethanol to have a positive net energy balance, while all studies show gasoline has a net negative energy balance. According to a 2006 Congressional Research Service (CRS) report, ethanol produced from corn provided 67 percent more energy than is used during production. Furthermore, the CRS report concluded that there is a net energy loss of 19 percent in the production of gasoline. The CRS report is not alone in finding a positive net energy balance for ethanol. Since 1995, at least 11 independent studies have found ethanol to have a positive net energy balance while only one study, which used methods that have been challenged by other scientists, found the energy balance to be negative (Source: National Corn Growers Association). However, this single study continues to be cited without proper context by renewable fuels critics and media outlets.
Rumor #8: Ethanol only provides a small reduction in greenhouse gases.Reality: In 2006, ethanol use in the U.S. reduced greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 8 million tons, the equivalent to removing annual emissions of more than 1.21 million cars from the road. (Source: Renewable Fuels Association)The American Lung Association of Chicago credits ethanol-blended gasoline with reducing smog-forming emissions in the Chicago area by 25 percent since 1990. The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory estimates that the use of 10 percent ethanol blends reduces greenhouse gases by up to 19 percent compared to conventional gasoline. In 2002, General Motors commissioned a “Well-to-Wheels” life cycle analysis of energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. The study compared 15 propulsion technologies and 75 different fuel pathways. The study found E85 reduces greenhouse gas emissions more than any other alternative fuel. Phase 2 of General Motors’ study, released in May 2005, concluded there is no better way to address petroleum fuel use and carbon dioxide emissions than by using ethanol. Hybrid and diesel propulsion systems reduced carbon dioxide emissions by only 20 to 30 percent, while E85 reduced carbon dioxide emissions anywhere from 75 to 85 percent.
Rumor #9: To produce high corn yields to meet ethanol demand, applications of farm chemicals will need to be dramatically increased.Reality: Over time, farmers are becoming more efficient and are using smaller amount of costly farm inputs per acre.According to the USDA’s Economic Research Service, the additional increase to be expected in corn yields comes with no large increase in nitrogen use per acre. Furthermore, with the improved genetic traits of seeds, less herbicide and pesticide will be required. Since 1996, biotech crops have reduced pesticide sprayings by 500 million pounds – 6.9 percent reduction worldwide (Source: Graham Brookes, PG Economics, Ltd.).
Rumor #10: Ethanol’s economic benefit for local communities has been overstated.Reality: At the 550 million gallon production level in 2006, Minnesota’s ethanol industry generated an estimated $2.77 billion in total economic impacts and over 10,000 jobs. Many of these jobs are located in greater Minnesota, where the state’s ethanol plants are located.Nationwide, 2005 ethanol industry supported more than 150,000 jobs. This economic activity helped boost U.S. household income by $5.7 billion (Source: Renewable |

Soft power, then, represents the third way of getting the outcomes you want. Soft power is contrasted with hard power, which has historically been the predominant realist measure of national power, through quantitative metrics such as population size, concrete military assets, or a nation's Gross Domestic Product. But having such resources does not always produce the desired outcomes as the United States discovered in the Vietnam War. The resources from which soft power behavior is derived are culture (when it is attractive to others), values (when there is no hypocrisy in their application) and foreign policies (when they are seen as legitimate in the eyes of others). Unless these conditions are present, culture and ideas do not necessarily produce the attraction that is essential for soft power behavior. The extent of attraction can be measured by public opinion polls, by elite interviews, and case studies. Nye argues that soft power is more than influence, since influence can also rest on the hard power of threats or payments. And soft power is more than just persuasion or the ability to move people by argument, though that is an important part of it. It is also the ability to attract, and attraction often leads to acquiescence.
If I am persuaded to go along with your purposes without any explicit threat or exchange taking place — in short, if my behavior is determined by an observable but intangible attraction — soft power is at work. Soft power uses a different type of currency — not force, not money — to engender cooperation. It uses an attraction to shared values, and the justness and duty of contributing to the achievement of those values. [2]
The success of soft power heavily depends on the actor’s reputation within the international community, as well as the flow of information between actors. Thus, soft power is often associated with the rise of globalization and neoliberal international relations theory. Popular culture and media is regularly identified as a source of soft power, as is the spread of a national language, or a particular set of normative structures; a nation with a large amount of soft power and the good will that engenders it inspire others to acculturate, avoiding the need for expensive hard power expenditures.

When the light turns green, you don't have to take off as quickly as possible. That pedal under your right foot is called the "gas pedal" for a good reason. The more you press down on it, the more gas you're pumping into the engine
Press lightly on the gas pedal, and you'll still accelerate, and you'll still get where you're going. You might be surprised at how little pressure it takes to get your car up to speed in a reasonable time.
. Racing up to red lights
When you're driving down the street, and you see a light red light or stop sign up ahead, you should lay off the gas sooner rather than later.
There's no point in keeping your foot on the gas until just before you reach the intersection. Let off the pedal sooner and give your engine a rest as you coast to the stop while braking gently. As an added benefit, your brake pads will last longer, too.
By themselves, these first two tips can improve your fuel economy around town by as much as 35 percent, according to tests conducted by automotive information Web site Edmunds.com.3. Confusing the highway with a speedway
Even if it doesn't involve hard acceleration, speeding wastes gas. The faster you go, the more air your vehicle has to push out of the way. It's like moving your hand through water. The faster you try to move your hand, the harder the water pushes back.
In tests by Consumer Reports, going 75 instead of 65 miles per hour reduced fuel economy by between 3 and 5 miles per gallon, depending on the vehicle.
4. Bumper-buzzing
Tailgating is a bad move for many reasons. First of all, it's unsafe. You reduce your ability to react if the car in front of you slows or stops. It also means you have to pay ultra-close attention to that car which reduces your ability to scan for other hazards ahead of you and to the sides.
And tailgating wastes gas. Every time the driver ahead taps his brakes, you have to slow down even more than he did. (That's because you can't react immediately so you have to slow even more because you're slowing down later.) Then you accelerate again to get back up to speed and resume your bumper-buzzing routine.
Hang back and you'll be safer - plus you'll be able to drive more smoothly and use less fuel. A good rule of thumb is to allow two seconds of space between your car and the one ahead. You can figure that out by counting off two seconds after the car in front of you passes an obvious landmark like an overpass.
5. Driving standing still
You've probably heard that it takes more gas to restart a car than to let it run. Maybe that used to be true, but it isn't anymore. With modern fuel-injection engines, it takes very little extra gas to restart a car once it's warmed up.
Idling, meanwhile, burns about a half-mile worth of gas every minute, according to the California Energy Commission. That's why hybrid cars shut down their gasoline engines whenever they stop, even for a moment.
Now you don't want to shut your engine down for every little stop in your regular, non-hybrid car - it's not designed for that - but if you're waiting for someone to run in and out of a convenience store, turn off the engine.
And don't go through the drive-through at fast food restaurants. You're already paying enough for the oil in those chicken nuggets.
Bonus tip: Don't idle your engine to let it warm up before driving. It does your engine no good and it wastes gas. Instead, start driving right away, but drive gently until the engine is warm.
6. Short hops
For really short trips, take advantage of the opportunity to get some exercise. Try walking to the store instead of driving. You can save gas and burn a few calories instead.
If you can't hoof it, save up your errands. A lot of short hops that let the engine cool down at home between trips can use twice as much gas as starting the car once and making a big sweep to all your stops, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
Go to your farthest destination first so your engine has a chance to reach its optimal operating temperature. Then make your other stops on the way back. With the engine warmed up, the car will restart easily and run efficiently all the way home.

May 21 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. oil company executives told Congress oil prices should be between $35 a barrel and $90 a barrel, as they testified for the second time this year about record energy prices
The price of oil should be ``somewhere between $35 and $65 a barrel,'' John Hofmeister, president of Shell Oil Co., the Houston-based subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell Plc, said at a Senate hearing today. Other executives said prices should be as much as $90 a barrel.
Representatives of the five largest publicly traded oil companies appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee to testify on record energy prices. Appearing today alongside Hofmeister were representatives of BP Plc, ConocoPhillips, Chevron Corp. and Exxon Mobil Corp.
Crude oil futures contracts touched $133.82 a barrel today on the New York Mercantile Exchange, the highest since trading began in 1983. Average U.S. retail gasoline prices hit a record $3.791 a gallon this week, according to the U.S. Energy Department.
Congress last week approved legislation to halt deliveries to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, in an effort to respond to record prices.
Today's committee hearing marks the second time the executives have gathered to testify before Congress this year, after an April 1 hearing of the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming.
`No Idea'
John Lowe, executive vice president of ConocoPhillips, said the price should be ``about $90 a barrel in this environment.''
J. Stephen Simon, senior vice president for Exxon Mobil, said he had ``no idea what the price should be today.'' He testified in April that historical market fundamentals pointed to a $50 a barrel to $55 a barrel oil price.
Peter Robertson, vice chairman of Chevron, said he thought the price was higher than the $35 to $65 figure cited by Hofmeister. He declined to give an exact number.
Robert Malone, president of BP America Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of London-based BP, said ``an oil price in the range of $60'' would be profitable for his company.
The House Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing with the same executives tomorrow.

Ketamine (ketamine hydrochloride) is a central nervous system depressant that produces a rapid-acting dissociative effect. It was developed in the 1970s as a medical anesthetic for both humans and animals. Ketamine is often mistaken for cocaine or crystal methamphetamine because of a similarity in appearance (NCADI, 2000). Also known as K, Special K, Vitamin K, Kit Kat, Keller, Super Acid, and Super C, Ketamine is available in tablet, powder, and liquid form. So powerful is the drug that, when injected, there is a risk of losing motor control before the injection is completed. In powder form, the drug can be snorted or sprinkled on tobacco or marijuana and smoked (Partnership for a Drug-Free America, 2000). The effects of Ketamine last from 1 to 6 hours, and it is usually 24–48 hours before the user feels completely “normal” again. |

The stock market then slumped further after minutes from last month's Fed meeting revealed that policymakers expected sharply lower economic growth and higher unemployment later this year -- and that inflation worries are likely to keep the central bank from cutting rates again.
High energy prices have been a source of anxiety for investors, as many retailers and credit card companies have noticed consumers paring back spending on discretionary items, including clothing and jewelry, to buy necessities such as gasoline and groceries, which have been soaring in price
