| When ethanol first came into use, it was put into older vehicles that had fuel systems that had become varnished over a period of use. Ethanol began to clean the varnish from tanks, fuel lines, and carburetors. This did cause fuel filters to plug. Once the fuel system was clean, this problem was over. Today detergent gasolines help keep fuel systems clean and, in most cases, ethanol fuel is put into clean fuel systems; therefore, the problem no longer exists. Iowans who visited Cuba on a trade mission report that Cuban livestock producers are still interested in buying and feeding U.S. distillers dried grains. Iowans on the trade mission talked with Cuban livestock producers, primarily dairies, that have experimented with feeding DDGs and found their experience very positive. Cuba purchased about 100,000 tons of DDGs from the U.S. last year, but indicated it will double its purchases this year. Cuba, however, continues to have infrastructure problems that hamper unloading DDGs at ports and transporting them to livestock producers.
