SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- Prosecutors demanded a six-year prison term for Hyundai Motor Co. Chairman Chung Mong-koo on Tuesday in his appeal trial against a three-year sentence handed down in February for embezzlement

Each year, member states of the G8 take turns assuming the presidency of the group. The holder of the presidency sets the group's annual agenda and hosts the summit for that year. The presidency for 2007 belongs to Germany, which hosts the 33rd G8 summit in Heiligendamm from June 6 to June 8.

The members of the Group of Seven (G-7) are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, which together account for about two-thirds of the world's economic output.

The leaders of these largest industrialized democracies have met annually since 1975 to discuss major economic and political issues. The participants at the first meeting in Rambouillet, France in November 1975 were France, West Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. Canada joined at the 1976 Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico Summit what came to be known as the G-7. Ever since, the site of the yearly Summit of the leaders has rotated among the seven countries. Since 1977, the President of the European Commission has also been represented at the Summit table

1. commit acts of cruelty to stray and feral dogs and cats
2. “recklessly” commit cruelty to an animal (prosecutors will no longer have to prove that a person intended to commit cruelty);
3. kill or cause serious bodily injury to animals “in a cruel manner”—which is defined as “a manner that causes or permits unnecessary or unjustifiable pain or suffering” (it will no longer be necessary to prove “torture”);
4. fail to provide water to an animal in a person’s custody

A prosecutor must still prove “torture” in cases involving cruelty to “livestock animals” (horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, etc.). However, “torture” is defined as “any act that causes unnecessary or unjustifiable pain or suffering.” This is the identical protection that was given to non-livestock animals! So, for the most part, the livestock vs. non-livestock protections are a distinction without a difference. This is a huge victory for horses. And, yes, horse tripping is still a crime.

Anti-Tethering: HB 1411, sponsored by State Rep. Buddy West, prohibits an owner from tethering a dog outside between the hours of 10 pm and 6 am and during extreme weather conditions. This bill is on its way to the governor’s desk.
