4 Reasons Demand - and Profits - Will Continue To Surge
Ethanol, to be sure, is here to stay…
There are 97 existing ethanol refineries in the U.S. pumping at maximum capacity. Nine are expanding and an additional 35 plants are currently under construction. But there’s one problem: There’s simply no way they can keep up with the surging demand for this alternative fuel.
By federal mandate, the country must use 7.5 billion gallons of renewable fuels by the year 2012, up from an estimated 5 billion gallons this year. And lawmakers in Washington are contemplating an even higher target: 15 billion gallons. The Wall Street Journal predicts that U.S. ethanol demand will likely increase by at least 50% this year alone.
This sudden demand for ethanol has allowed suppliers to sell out entire inventories at high enough prices to fund a massive – and highly profitable – construction boom.
The total number of ethanol refineries is expected to double within the next few years, and an estimated 3 billion gallons of new capacity will be ready by 2008--a 40% increase over today's capacity just to try and keep up with demand.
Right now, several companies are solving these supply concerns. And there are four reasons business will be strong for decades…

Would you believe that a black in the US is about 20 times more likely to be a victim of hate crime than a white? This is not the claim of a left-wing crazy. Anyone inclined to commit a hate offense will have no trouble finding a victim. The Census Bureau reports that as of July 1, 1998 there were approximately 223.0 million whites residing in the U.S., 34.4 million blacks, 30.4 million Hispanics, 10.5 million Asians and Pacific Islanders, and 2.4 million Native Americans, not to mention Protestants, Catholics, Jews and Moslems.

The hate crimes following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which included murder and beatings, were directed at Arabs solely because they shared or were perceived as sharing the national background of the hijackers responsible for attacking the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
The Office for Victims of Crime, Department of Justice, gives grants to states to provide victim assistance and victim compensation in the event of a hate crime. Upon the request of a state, the Office will also send out a response team from one of its eight regional offices to help.

According to an article recently published in the journal Blood, allogeneic stem cell transplants are associated with an increased risk of diabetes and hypertension.
An allogeneic stem cell transplant is a common treatment for some types of cancers, particularly leukemia and lymphoma. The process of an allogeneic stem cell transplant typically includes the use of high-dose chemotherapy or total body irradiation. These treatment approaches tend to kill more cancer cells than conventional doses; however, they are also associated with more severe side effects.
One common and potentially life-threatening side effect of these high-dose therapies is severely low levels of blood cells. Fortunately, hematopoeitic stem cells (immature blood cells) from a donor can be infused into the patient following high-dose therapy. These stem cells will then mature into functioning blood cells and can reduce serious complications associated with low levels of blood cells. Another approach to stem cell transplant is an autologous stem cell transplant, in which the patient’s own stem cells are collected prior therapy and reinfused following therapy.
Because patients who undergo allogeneic stem cell transplants can achieve long-term survival, researchers have become more focused on identifying long-term side effects that may be associated with this treatment approach.
Researchers affiliated with the Bone Marrow Transplant Survivor Study recently conducted a study involving 1,089 survivors who had undergone allogeneic or autologous stem cell transplants. The average follow-up was 8.6 years. The main findings of this study included the following
Here's what a bad boss is: Someone who lies, cheats, steals, or touches you after you've told him, in writing, not to. If you have one of these bosses, quit complaining and start applying for other jobs.

A Boss-Management Decalogue
One of the most important parts of being competent at work is managing up: Making sure you give your boss what he or she needs, and then getting what you need in return. That's no one's responsibility but your own.
Here are 10 ways to manage your boss:
1. Understand the person you're dealing with.
Is she detail-oriented? Give her detailed reports. Is she a big-picture thinker? Tell her your big ideas. Does he like voicemail? Then leave some, even if you hate using it.
Understand her personality strengths and weaknesses, because this is usually the path toward forging a relationship. If you know her weaknesses, you can have empathy for her shortcomings instead of impatience. And whatever you feel will show, so figure out how to feel compassion for your boss, or you'll get nowhere with her.
2. Ask for your quarterly goals, in writing.
If you don't have goals, how can you even know what your job is? And if you don't know what your job is, you can be sure you won't make your boss happy.
If your boss does not know your goals either, write your own. Create a fun job for yourself that will be an integral part of the company's strategy. If your boss doesn't like the goals you create, she'll suddenly be able to come up with them herself.
3. Know your boss's biggest worries, and help him address them.
Why are you working on projects your boss doesn't care about? Your job is to make your boss love you so he helps you get the skills you need to grow in your career.
If you have stuff on your plate that doesn't matter, do it fast, and don't worry about being judged on the quality of this work because your boss doesn't care. Focus on the stuff that matters to your boss, because that's what will make your boss love you.
4. Look at your boss's weaknesses as opportunities.
If your boss is great at project management, then surely she doesn't need you to do that. Be great at the stuff your boss is terrible at -- like people management, maybe -- and help your boss rally her troops. If she's great at sales but hates the detailed reporting, get great at the reporting and offer to do all the stuff she hates to do.
If your boss is terrible at managing meetings, instead of complaining about it, volunteer to do the brunt of the organizing for him. He'll appreciate that way more than you helping with stuff he doesn't worry about.
5. Focus on your own needs by focusing on your boss's needs.
You and your boss are a team. You make your boss look great in the organization and in the world, and your boss will help you grow and meet your own goals.
To do this, you need to focus more on helping your boss and less on doing work you love. The first act begets the second: A boss who feels indebted to you will give you what you want.
6. See the good in people.
Don't tell me your boss doesn't care about you, or that he's only concerned with the bottom line. It's not humanly possible for your boss to not care about you if you understand him, are there for him, support him, and genuinely care.
You have to be authentic with your boss to develop a real relationship. Figure out how to care about him deeply -- as a person whom you can help. If you can't do this for your boss, how can you expect it from him?
7. Get a list of your boss's priorities.
When you have too much work, this allows you to tell your boss that you can't do x, y, and z because they're not high enough priorities to him. In other words, you can say, "I could do x, but you said a, b, and c are very important to you, and I don't want to compromise those."
This is a great way of saying "no" to work in a way that makes your boss feel very respected, understood, and taken care of.
8. Prioritize your own work in terms of what matters to your boss.
Fit your high-priority items into a reasonable schedule, and don't do low-priority items until the important stuff is done. This allows you to always deliver on what matters to your boss.
Keeping your boss happy means being a high performer. People don't care if you perform well on stuff that doesn't matter to them, so don't.
9. Give weekly updates.
It doesn't matter if your boss asks for them or not. This is a team report, for you and your boss; you're the team, working on your boss's priorities.
This is when you tell your boss how much you've accomplished that will help her. Tell her things you see that might be roadblocks for her, and how you can help her fix them in the next week. Also tell her what you're planning to do that's extremely important to her so she's sure not to ask you to do unimportant work over the next week.
10. Don't get stuck on personality types.
We each have preferences for the people we hang out with. But the most successful people can get along with anyone. If you can't get along with the type of person your boss is, it's your shortcoming, not his.
Read some psychology books about social monitors, and how we can teach ourselves to authentically connect with anyone by practicing empathy. And then do it. After all, why is it your boss's job to adjust to you? You're the one with the problem.
The Choice Is Yours
The bottom line: Take responsibility for yourself. No one forces you to have the job you have. You could leave anytime
If you're not going to leave, then you're choosing the boss you have. And since you chose your boss, start making her into a good one. Otherwise, why did you choose her?

That job is left to the U.S. military, unless the theater commander decides otherwise.
Rep. Henry Waxman, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, scheduled a hearing Wednesday on the Blackwater contract.
Waxman, D-Calif., has cited examples in news reports that Blackwater paid employees $600 a day, and those charges increased to $1,500 a day by the time several layers of subcontractors tacked on their charges to the main contractor.

وزير بهداشت، درمان و آموزش پزشكي روزشنبه از دستيابي دانشمندان جوان ايراني به داروي گياهي كنترل ويروس ايدز خبر داد.
به گزارش خبرنگار سایت پزشکان ، “كامران باقري لنكراني” درمراسم تقدير از دستاوردهاي بزرگ دانشمندان جوان كشور، گفت : اين داروي تركيبي ريشه گياهي دارد و با استفاده دانش نانو بيوتكنولوژي توليد شده است.
“داروي گياهي كنترل ويروس ايدز برروي سيستم حياتي خون و سيستم ايمني بدن بسيار موثر عمل ميكند”.
اين دارو ” “imodنامگذاري شده و بر روي آن چهار تا پنج سال كارهاي تحقيقاتي شده است و ۱۵پژوهشكده براي توليد آن فعاليت كرده اند.
اين داروي گياهي كنترل ويروس ايدز تاكنون روي ۲۰۰بيمار داوطلب آزمايش شدهاست.

فرسودگى استخوان، متأسفانه درمانناپذير است. مثلأ وقتى استخوانهاى زانو فرسوده مىشوند و برداشتن هر قدم با درد همراه است يكى از راههاى درمان، جايگزين كردن يك قطعه استخوان مصنوعى با استخوان ساييده شده است. در جراحى بخشى از استخوان با اره مخصوصى بريده مىشود و قطعه مصنوعى درون زانو پيوند مىخورد. اگر استخوان با كمى انحا بريده شود قطعه پيوندى بهتر درون جوش مىخورد، اما مشكل اينجاست كه با ارههاى جراحى فقط میتوان استخوان را مستقيم بريد. گروه مهندسى دانشگاه هانور آلمان روش تازهاى براى اين نوع جراحى ابداع كرده است. به جاى اره مىتوان از جريان آب استفاده كرد، جريانی شبيه به اشعه، البته نه اشعه ليزر، اشعهاى از جنس آب. از منفذ ريز يك لوله آهنى كوچك جريان باريكى از آب كه به زحمت با چشم غيرمسلح قابل ديده است روى استخوان گرفته مىشود. شدت جريان آب بقدرى زياد است كه استخوان را سوراخ مىكند. البته قرار نيست استخوان را سوراخ كرد! “كريستيان بيسكوت” يكى از افراد تيم مهندسى مشغول برش استخوانى است كه درون ماكت انسانى كار گذاشته شده است. او با مهارت بخشى از استخوان برش مىدهد. استفاده از جريان آب به جاى ليزر روش چندان تازهاى نيست. در موارد صنعتى هنگام برش فلزات يا موادى كه سختى كمترى دارد از اشعه آبى به جاى ليزر استفاده مىشود، مثلاً هنگام برش موكتهاى كف ماشين در اتومبيل سازى. مزيت اين روش اينجاست كه هنگام برش قطعه با جريان آب، تركيبات اوليه گرم نمىشود. برش ليزرى، قطعهاى را كه روى آن كار مىشود داغ مىكند. اين گرما بسيارى از مواد اوليه مثل مصنوعات نخ و پشم موكتهاى درون ماشين را بد فرم مىكند. اما از طرف ديگر شدت جريان آب هنوز به حدى نيست كه بتواند مواد سختترى مثل ورقههاى آهنى را هم برش دهد. مهندسان آلمانى براى برطرف كردن اين نقص دست به ابتكار جالبى زدهاند. جريان آب با ذرات ريز شن همراه مىشود. به اين ترتيب ذرات شن، قدرت برش جريان آب را افزايش مىدهند.
هدف مهندسان دانشگاه هانور استفاده از جريان آب در پزشكى است. در مورد فوايد اين روش بيسكوت مىگويد : ” مزيتش اين است كه مثلاً ما در جراحى زانو طورى استخوان را برش مىدهيم كه فرم منحنى پيدا كند و نه اينكه مثل برش با اره صاف بريده شود. در نهايت پروسه درمان و پيوند قطعه مصنوعى هم بهتر پيش مىرود.“
در حالى كه گرماى ناشى از اره كشيدن استخوان را گاه تا صدوپنجاه درجه سانتىگراد داغ مىكند و سلولهاى استخوانى را از بين مىبرد، جريان آب سرد است، سلولها آسيب نمىبينند و پس از پيوند قطعه مصنوعى درون استخوان سلولهاى محل پيوند بهتر رشد مىكنند و قطعه خوب جوش مىخورد. اما هنگام برش استخوان نمىتوان از ذرات شن استفاده كرد. كريك بورمن يكى ديگر از مهندسان تيم مىگويد:” اگر از شن استفاده كنيم بخشى از اين ذرات شنى درون بدن مىمانند كه باعث التهاب مىشود و چرك مىكند.“
اين گروه تصميم دارد به جاى ذرات شن از دانههاى ريزى از جنس منيزيوم استفاده كند. بورمن اضافه مىكند:” اين ذرات جذب بدن مىشوند يا اصلأ جذب خود استخوان مىشوند و يا اينكه دفع مىشود و پس از مدتى اثرى از آنها باقى نمىماند.“
نكته اينجاست كه بايد تمامى جوانب جراحى با جريان آب خوب سنجيده شوند. مثل احتمال لخته شدن خون يا متورم شدن بافت اطراف استخوان. مشكل بعدى قطع يكباره جريان آب پس از برش استخوان است، زيرا اطراف استخوانها بافتهاى نرمترى هستند كه نبايد آسيب ببينند. گروه مهندسى در فكر طراحى مكندهاى است كه زير استخوان قرار مىگيرد و پس از پايان جراحى آب را جذب مىكند. در مدت سه سال آينده اولين نمونه كامل اين طرح كه قابل استفاده در پزشكى خوهد بود وارد بازار مىشود. آيا اين روش جاى ارههاى استخوانى را خواهد گرفت؟
بيسكوت:” فكر نمىكنم براى هميشه و به طور كامل جانشين شود به دليل اينكه بخشهاى از بدن قابل دسترسى نيستند مثل جراحى جمجمه يا ستون فقرات. استفاده از جريان آب با ضريب خطر بالايى همراه است در اين موارد نمىتوان ريسك كرد.“

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A top U.S. scientist known as the "father of gene therapy" was sentenced on Friday to 14 years in prison for molesting a young girl after his victim told the court that the sex abuse nearly drove her to suicide.
William French Anderson, who won international acclaim for his work as a geneticist, was convicted in July of sexually abusing the girl, who is now 19, over several years starting when she was 9.
Anderson denied the charges at trial and his lawyers argued that he was guilty only of pressuring the girl to do well in school. The 70-year-old scientist resigned in September from the University of Southern California Gene Therapy Laboratories.
The sentence was handed down after the victim, who traveled to Los Angeles from the Midwestern college she now attends, told the court that she would live with the pain of the molestation for the rest of her life.
"It didn't just end after he took away my chance of having a normal childhood," she said. "It didn't just end after he tried to rip apart my family. It didn't just end when I was on the edge of suicide in high school. It didn't just end when I finally went to the police or when he was convicted and it isn't going to just end today."
Defense lawyers asked for leniency based in part on Anderson's age, saying a long prison term would amount to a death sentence. Anderson argued that he should remain free so that his research could benefit society, and he was joined in that request by several prominent scientists.
But Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor said he wished those who wrote on Anderson's behalf had heard the evidence.
"The conduct of Dr. Anderson over the years is egregious," Pastor said. "Dr. Anderson is brilliant, sophisticated, worldly and he is a manager and administrator used to making tough decisions. He made the conscious decision to continue to engage in the most reprehensible conduct."
Prosecutors said Anderson, a fifth-degree black belt in tae kwon do who served as a physician for U.S. Olympic teams in the 1980s, began abusing the girl while teaching her martial arts at his Los Angeles area home.
The victim testified that Anderson touched her private parts as she was hanging from a punching bag. He later performed "medical exams" when she was naked and would thrust on top of her as she lay reading a comic book.
At trial Prosecutors played a tape-recorded conversation in which the victim accused Anderson of molesting her. He is heard to respond: "I just did it. Something in me was just evil."
The former professor of biochemistry, molecular biology and pediatrics had been the subject of glowing media profiles and was once considered for Time magazine's "Man of the Year."
APPELLATE COURT SETS HEARING FOR STEM CELL LITIGATION
Case challenging Prop 71 to be heard February 14th
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) announced today that oral arguments in the litigation challenging the Constitutionality of the California Stem Cell Research and Cures Act (Proposition 71) have been set by the Court of Appeal (First District) for Wednesday, February 14, 2007, at 9:00 a.m. (Pacific) (Civic Center, 350 McAllister Street in San Francisco).
Under the California Constitution, the Appellate Court must render a decision in the case within 90 days of the hearing, absent additional briefings required by the court.
Plaintiffs in the case – People’s Advocate and the National Tax Limitation Foundation (represented by the Life Legal Defense Foundation), and the California Family Bioethics Council – are appealing the decision of the Alameda County Superior Court issued April 21, 2006, which found Proposition 71 to be Constitutional and CIRM to be in full compliance with statutory requirements, accountable to the public, and subject to state government oversight.
"We are eager to see this litigation end so we can get on with our work," said Zach W. Hall, CIRM’s President and Chief Scientific Officer. "Fortunately, because of the strong support of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, the leadership of our chairman, Bob Klein, and the generosity of private philanthropists, we have been able to pursue our scientific mission in spite of the lawsuit. We want to put the bond funds to work as soon as possible, so that the research that California voters overwhelmingly approved can move forward as rapidly as possible toward therapies and cures."
If the Superior Court judgment is affirmed, the plaintiffs can appeal to the California Supreme Court. They have 40 days from the date the Appellate Court’s decision is final to file a petition for review. The California Supreme Court must decide whether to take the case within 60 days thereafter (which the court can extend to 90 days). The Supreme Court is not required to accept an appeal.
