Using Alcohol Fuel is not a new idea.

ethanol fuel for your car

Henry Ford’s vision was for everyone to be able to grow their own fuel. That's why his Model “A” was designed to run on either alcohol or gasoline... because Gasoline wasn't readily available.

Make your own fuelThis photo, taken in April 1933, shows a Lincoln Nebraska gas station of the Earl Coryell Co. selling "Corn Alcohol Gasoline." The test marketing of ethanol blends was common in the Midwest at this time, but it did not succeed due to the market dominance of the major oil companies.

Many countries around the world have millions of vehicle running on alcohol today. The idea of using alcohol for fuel is not new but becoming more attractive to the public as our dependence on gasoline becomes increasingly more expensive.

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers is presenting a bill to Congress today that will help independent gas stations add facilities to support ethanol.
Ethanol gas is an alternative form of fuel that is primarily made from corn.

"It's good for everyone," Rogers' press secretary Sylvia Warner said. "It's good for farmers, for the environment and for our national security."

Warner said the bill would reduce Americans' dependency on foreign oil, promote business with U.S. farmers and reduce pollutants because ethanol use emits less greenhouse gasses than traditional fuel.

Only independently owned gas stations would be able to apply for a federal grant to implement ethanol-conducive facilities, Warner said.

"The money he's proposing is for independent stations, not the big oil companies," she said. "You may have a family that owns two or three gas stations or maybe a convenience store that they own gas pumps at."

Rogers is up for re-election, and even his opponents, Jim Marcinkowski and Patrick Flynn, believe this legislation is beneficial.

Marcinkowski, D-Lake Orion, said he agrees with the ethanol legislation, but says Rogers does not have his priorities straight.

"Bottom line is this: There's no doubt in my mind that this country faces an energy crisis," he said. "The energy use in the U.S. has become a national security issue. For purposes of national security, we need to pursue every alternative available to lessen our dependency on oil.

"We will not be able to drill our way out of the problem."

Warner said flexible-fuel cars, which can use either ethanol or traditional gasoline, are available to purchase, but there are only 600 stations across the nation that have ethanol pumps. The grants would give $30,000 to a station for upgrades with a cap of $60,000 if owners have two or more gas stations. Warner said estimates for ethanol-conducive facilities vary depending on region, but typically cost between $50,000 and $100,000.

The money to pay for Rogers' proposed grants would come from fines paid by automakers that don't follow Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards, which are certain mile-per-gallon rules that have been in place since the 1970s.

"This will have a huge impact on being able to purchase ethanol," Warner said. "The congressman believes this grant program will double (the number of ethanol stations) in a year."

Patrick Flynn, Rogers' Republican opponent in the primary, said he's been talking to members of the agriculture community because he thinks they have a large role to play in alternative energy exploration, and he supports ethanol use.

"It's an important issue," Flynn said. "It's hard for people to think of much anything else right now when they're driving."

Read this article carefully because it echoes much of philosophy and trading rules that we employ at MSW. One of the biggest rules that we follow is: Buy Near the Yearly High. Any member of this community can tell you that we love to follow and buy stocks making new highs or stocks within 10% of a new high. My experience has proven that stocks that make new highs usually continue to trade higher. Another subject that Bulkowski speaks about is: "Half of all Trades Will Fail". This is so important because it is so true.

I struggled with my losses early in my trading career and I hated losing because it tore me apart. I felt so good when I was right even more so than making the actually money (that may be hard to believe). I now understand that trading has nothing to do with winning and losing, and it has everything to do with profits and losses (money management). Some of the world’s best traders have a 30% or 40% win-loss ratio but they make large sums of money year in and year out. They cut losses short and let the few big winners run. If you only hit one or two big winners each year, you can have 5 or 10 small losers; it will always work in your favor. Making a mistake while investing is 100% nayural as long as you recognize that it is a mistake and you sell the stock immediately, no questions asked!

Understand that investing is NOT about winning and losing, it’s always about the bottom line. Once an investor accepts this statement as truth, they will see their bottom line grow. It took me several years to finally believe this statement and train my emotions to also believe it. As humans, society trains us to win at everything and this hurts most novice investors.

Bulkowski refers to two charts in this article but I do not have the images to upload here. The original article was published in this month's edition of SFO Magazine, a publication about Stocks, Futures & Options.

    Enjoy the article:

Lessons Learned after 25 Years of Trading
    by: Thomas N. Bulkowski

Profits lost can be lessons learned. Eight simple lessons taught by the greatest teacher of all – experience.

Trading stocks doesn’t require a college degree. A trader’s education may begin at a bookstore or be handed down from relatives. Even before I earned my driver’s license, I became interested in stocks. After college, I contacted two dozen investment firms and reviewed their prospectuses for my first investment: a money market fund. I paper traded stocks for four years before I bought my first one, mostly because I didn’t have the bucks to invest, but also because the riskiest investment my parents ever made was in a U.S. savings bond. The result was worth the wait as I made 88 percent on that first stock. Over the years, I learned a number of lessons worth sharing, and although simply reading them cannot prepare a trader for the profits and losses and the stress of placing trades, it’s certainly a start.

Half of All Trades Will Fail
This surprises most beginning traders. My lifetime win/loss record is 49 percent, and it falls in the 40-percent to 60-percent range that many professional traders are rumored to maintain. How often a trader wins or loses is less important than how much they win. If a trader makes a million dollars in one trade and loses $10,000 in each of ten trades, he still has $900,000 to play with despite a win/loss percentage of just nine percent.

    Use Stops to Limit Losses
If half of all trades fail, then a trader needs to know how to limit losses and maximize gains. One easy way to do that is to use a stop-loss order. . I bought 400 shares of Linens ‘N Things at 31.75 after the earnings announcement caused the price to gap up, forming what I call an earnings flag – a generic term for a price pause after an earnings announcement. I sold at 35.20 when price pierced an up-sloping trendline drawn beneath the valleys, confirmed by other technical indicators I follow and a downward turn in the general market. I made $1,350 in a month – more than ten percent on the trade.

As price climbed, I raised my stop from 28 to 30.84, to 32.13 and finally to 33.23. Notice how the numbers are oddball ones, not 31, 32 or 33.25. I don’t use round numbers, as they are common support or resistance zones. I place my stops below the support zones, trying to give price every opportunity to move higher.

When price climbed above the prior peak and made a new high, I raised the stop to a few cents below the nearby valley. Peaks and valleys are places where price is likely to find support, so they make handy stop-loss locations.

Notice how price formed a second peak at 36 and change – a double top – before sliding down to 24. Holding onto this stock and riding price lower would have been a costly mistake. That’s why stops are so important.

    Scenario Trading: Ignore News
I read the business press daily but don’t pay much attention to trends they see forming. I remember a columnist in a weekly news publication touting that gold was a buy. Once a month, he’d quote a different expert who said the price of gold had bottomed and now was the time to buy. Gold continued down. A full two years later, his prognostication finally came true. Gold bottomed. Anyone buying gold stocks during his bullish buy signals would be choking on the metal.

Scenario trading is believing the sound bites and trading on them. The times I have invested in a scenario, I find myself so confident of the analysis that I invariably lose big, taking losses that are 15 percent or higher instead of the usual five to ten percent. As price drops, I average down (buy more at a lower price), compounding the loss. Averaging down is a wonderful technique for buy-and-hold investors willing to wait years for a stock to recover, but it leads to large losses for traders. Don’t average down, and don’t believe the scenarios spun by the news outlets. The purchase may be near the peak, or from a portfolio manager who is dumping his shares.

    Let Profits Run
Want to make a bundle in the stock market? Don’t trade. If a trader uses the weekly scale for signals, he will make more money per trade than if he uses the daily scale. If a trader uses the daily scale, he’ll make more money per trade than if he trades intraday. As the trading frequency increases, the per-trade profit decreases. This makes intuitive sense. A stock can double in a year, but a trader would be hard pressed to double his money in one intraday trade.

Day trading allows a trader to make small amounts of money numerous times in one day. Position trading allows a trader to make a larger amount of money, but it may take days, weeks or even months to achieve the results.

I’m not knocking day trading. What I am suggesting is that a trader should let profits run. Don’t be so quick to sell. Whether day trading, position trading or buying and holding, there will come a time when it will be wise to sell. Wait for it. Follow a few stocks, and get a feel for how they move. Learn to predict significant price turns.

    Buy Near the Yearly High
When I started investing, I didn’t have much money to spend, so I bottom fished. I picked stocks between $5 and $20 per share because that’s all I could afford. I bought them as they bottomed – or so I hoped. Invariably, the price dropped lower. If I held on for years, the rewards would be handsome, usually well over 100 percent. Sometimes, though, I would panic and sell at the bottom, which resulted in losses of 50 to 70 percent – the kind of hit that makes any trader’s mouth pop open and leaves him gasping for air.

It took years to discover what I was doing wrong because I was making money and wasn’t that concerned. First, I wasn’t using stops. Second, I was buying near the low and holding on until the stock rebounded. What would happen if I bought near the yearly high?

Now I select stocks with breakouts from chart patterns within a third of the yearly high because my statistical analysis of chart patterns says that’s where they perform best. I especially like it when the breakout makes a new high. There is little overhead resistance to stop a price run-up. Upward momentum allows a trader to place a stop and raise it as prices rise. If price doesn’t rise within a few days, that’s a good clue that the trade will result in a loss. Consider selling immediately.

When a trader buys near the yearly low, the tendency is for price to continue down. The trader doesn’t have a chance to raise the stop to breakeven. Like trying to catch a falling knife, trying to call the bottom in a stock is very difficult, even for the experts. Buying near the bottom is tempting, but do it sparingly.

    Use Trendlines as Sell Signals
Trendlines are one of my favorite tools. By definition, if prices are trending up and then drop below a trendline, the trend isn’t up any longer. But just because price drops below an up-sloping trendline doesn’t mean that price will continue moving down.

Victor Sperandeo in his book, Trader Vic – Methods of a Wall Street Master (Wiley, 1991), says there are three ingredients to determining a trend change from up to down: (1) price pierces an up-sloping trendline; (2) price approaches the level of a prior peak but fails to attain it (or overshoots a bit before dropping); and (3) price closes below a prior valley. He also describes the method for down-sloping trends following similar guidelines.

Do I use his method? Sometimes. When a stock’s price goes almost vertical, I move my stop closer and draw an up-sloping trendline. I know it’s time to sell when price closes below the trendline. Even if I am wrong, it doesn’t matter because I don’t own the stock anymore.

    Trade with the Trend
Anyone who has ventured into a river for a dip will say that swimming with the current is a lot easier than swimming against it. The same is true for stocks. For the best performance, select stocks that are moving with the general market and industry trends. I use the S&P 500 or Nasdaq Composite as the proxy for the markets. For the industry, my portfolio of 350 stocks contains more than 30 different industries. I look at each stock in the same industry as the one I’m interested in trading to see how they are doing.

Recently I sold a stock because others in the industry were rounding over and starting to decline. I lost 4.6 percent on the trade, but that’s a small loss, considering. Time will tell if the call was a good one, but it won’t matter because I’ll be trading something else.

Develop a Feel for the Market
Every day I eat an apple. Since I’ve been eating apples for a long time, I can tell a good one from a bad one. I check for firmness, dents and color before I buy, trying to sense what’s beneath the surface. Trading stocks is like eating apples. A trader develops a feel for how the markets and the stocks are behaving.

On October 11, 2004, I bought 1,000 shares of JLG that filled at 16.43. I bought primarily because of the Fibonacci retrace of the prior rise. In other words, prices dropped from the peak at point A, almost 62 percent of the distance of the prior rise, DA. With the stock declining for three days in a row, I felt the end was near. I was correct and bought just two days before price turned at B. The stock rounded up, forming an ascending scallop chart pattern. As price climbed, I raised my stop twice.

On November 18, I sold my position and received a fill at 19.85. Why sell? The stock was approaching 20, which is usually a resistance zone. On the monthly scale, the price at 21 also was nearing the top of a right-angled and descending, broadening pattern. The pattern resembles a megaphone tilted so that the top of it is horizontal and the bottom slopes downward. With price trending upward, I felt that the stock needed a rest and the scallop would form a handle. I wanted to get out before price retraced its gain by forming the handle, so I sold at the market open. I made almost $3,400 or more than 20 percent in about a month.

The Longer You Trade, The “Luckier” You Can Become
Other traders followed my lead as the stock closed down over a buck or five percent on the day I sold. The next day, an earnings announcement sent the stock gapping lower to 15.56 before closing at 17.30. This was an almost perfect swing trade. I was lucky, sure, but it still surprises me how “lucky” I’ve been as my trading knowledge has grown over 25 years. Or perhaps the result could be described more accurately as 25 years of preparation meeting a market opportunity.

Shorting a stock is the exact opposite of buying a stock. When you short a stock you are hedging your bets that the stock will go down in price unlike when you buy a stock and believe the price will go up.

Many investors try and short a stock way to early as they believe the stock price is way overvalued. However many times a stock that is overvalued in price may become even more overvalued especially when the stock market is in an extended upward move. The proper time to short a stock is after it has encountered its first major sell off and bounced which sets the stage for a second stronger move to the downside.

Let's look a specific example form the Spring of 2003. COKE made a strong run from July of 2002 until January of 2003 and gained nearly 75% over a 6 month period.

After peaking in January COKE then sold off but found support near its 38.2% Fibonacci Retracement Level near $59 (point A) and then preceded to rally over the next few weeks on low volume (point B).

COKE then ran into strong resistance as it rallied back to its 61.8% Fibonancci Retracement Level near $65.50 (point C) calculated from the early Janaury 2003 high to the low made during the first week February. This was then followed by an even stronger sell off in which COKE dropped from $65 to $47 over the next three weeks (points C to D).

Thus the best time to short a stock is to wait for it to bounce after it makes its initial sell off and then try and catch the second stronger move downward. When looking for stocks to short make sure they are exhibiting these three characteristics.

    1. The stock has already undergone one significant move downward after making a top.
    2. The stock then finds support at a certain Fibonacci Retracement Level or Moving Average and rallies on poor volume.
    3. The stock then stalls out near its 38.2%, 50% or 61.8% Fibonacci Retracement Level after rallying.

By following these simple rules investors will have a much higher success rate when attempting to short stocks.

    Regards,

    Getting Started As a Rookie

As A New Day & Stock Trader!

You MUST follow these RULES if you are to survive as a new Rookie Day and/or Stock Trader. As a ROOKIE Day and/or Stock Trader the odds of you being successful are totally against you. Your chances of even "breaking even" are slim to none "IF" you do not approach your new career in a calm, conservative, systematic and diversified manner.

It's extremely important you follow the guidelines and RULES we have outlined below to insure your new career as a Day and/or Stock Trader as well as your Stock Investments are not short lived!

Please take the following Day & Stock training and advice to heart....

The general THEME of this lesson is as follows...

"Minimize Your Risks & Maximize Your Gains"!

When you understand this you will survive as a new Rookie Day &/or Stock Trader!

#1. Number One Rule Is "Follow The Rules"!

Most Rookies have the URGE to jump right in the first few days and start trading using real money because they see the veterans of our organization making money. It looks easy but they do not understand the reason the veterans are making it look easy. The KEY to a veteran's success is they took the time to learn how to trade using our trading techniques, systems and strategies by following the RULES outlined in this lesson...

We will guarantee if you DO NOT precisely follow the rules in this lesson you will not survive!

"Minimize Your Risks & Maximize Your Gains"!

#2. First Determine How You Want To Trade!

There are several trading techniques, strategies and systems and you need to determine the most appropriate for your trading personality. We know it will take some time and you want to start making money tomorrow but Rome was not built in a day. Please take a deep breath, relax and check out the links below:

#3. Find ONE Trading Technique to stick with and become very good at it!

Many times a ROOKIE will jump around from one trading system to another (grass is always greener on the other side of the fence) only to discover the first trading system they chose was the best. Normally they are out of money by the time they determine this so follow this very important rule...

For example we have come VERY GOOD at trading the "Resistance (r/p), Support (s/p) and The Cup & Handle (c/h)" plays. 95% of our profits come from those plays!   An understanding of what and how to read these technicals is the basis of our Trading Systems.  Click this link, Charting, Opinions & Analysis, to study ...

Next to charts & technical indicators, we think you'll also find that the Time of Day can (will) also strongly affect the ultimate profitability of your trades.  Our Trading by the clock tips are found in this lesson, Trading Time Frames.

If you decide to try a new trading system because the one you are using is not producing as expected make sure you test this new trading system for at least 2 weeks by "Paper Trading" as outlined in this lesson...

"Minimize Your Risks & Maximize Your Gains"!

    #4. Paper Trade!

What is typically called "Paper Trading" is either writing down a stock you would consider trading with real money on a piece of paper determining the entry and exit price or better yet entering them into your broker execution simulator...

This exercise will acquaint you with your broker execution program as well as establish and become familiar with the type of stocks in the day and stock trading system you want to use…

    A. Select the stock(s) and either write them down on paper or enter them into your broker execution simulator.

    B. Make sure you enter the trade using "Stop Loss Orders" and any other type of trading procedures you normally would use as if you were using real money.

    C. Multiply this trade by the number of shares of stock(s) you would normally buy.

    D. Paper trade or use your broker execution simulator for about 2 to 3 weeks or until you are at least 75% proficient.

IMPORTANT - Do NOT move to the next step until you have paper traded for a minimum of 2 weeks or are 75% proficient!

"Minimize Your Risks & Maximize Your Gains"!

    #5 Trading With Real Money!

What you will discover is actual Day Trading (with real money) is MUCH harder and DIFFERENT than Paper Trading with a simulator. Now you are dealing with your hard earned cash and you are emotionally involved.

Each time you press the button to buy or sell you have to strike a reasonable balance between FEAR and GREED.

    A. Initially trade in quantities of not more than 100 shares and do not, for the first 20 executions, trade more than 20% of your capital until you hit a 75% proficiency rate, then keep moving your shares up 100 at a time until you then again obtain the same 75% proficiency rate.

This way you will build confidence. You will get a feel on how easy it is or is not to catch an order. Always remember the simulator will most always catch an order at your intended entry level. The REAL broker execution program does NOT!

True you may NOT make much money on your first 20 trades and in fact you may lose money after you pay the broker commissions but what you will learn with this very important lesson is...

"You Must Experience & Learn First Hand How Using Real Money With The Actual Broker Execution Program Works" with the LIMITED RISK of only 100 shares"!

One wrong click of the MOUSE with 1,000 shares could cost you thousands of dollars - one wrong click of the mouse with 100 shares maybe only $100...

"Minimize Your Risks & Maximize Your Gains"!

#6. Always use a "Limit Order"!

Another way the Rookie Stock Traders loses money is buying stock at "MARKET" price! You must learn the difference between MARKET & LIMIT or you will lose money as a Rookie!

A Market Order is the best price the market will bear. If ABC is moving up fast and there are no other shares available from the Market Makers at 7 then your broker execution program will buy the shares at the next best market price, which may be 7 1/16. If ABC is really moving you could end up buying ABC at 7 1/2.

Let the stock trend down just below your intended BUY PRICE, then place your BUY STOP ORDER at your intended entry price. If the stock keeps going down you will not buy the stock. If it moves up, you're locked in with the stock NOW TRENDING UP!

DO NOT BUY using MARKET! It is too risky. Always use a LIMIT order. This is an order that says I want to buy 200 shares of ABC at 7 and if you can’t sell it to me at that price FORGET IT! I won’t buy ABC at ALL!

Never use a "Market Order" as Market Orders can catch a stock at the TOP of a move and cost you BIG TIME.

"Minimize Your Risks & Maximize Your Gains"!

    #7. Use "Stop Loss Orders"!

The most difficult part of Stock Trading is taking a loss. You will have to learn how to take losses (don’t think you will not lose money on a trade because you WILL)! Remember this – YOU WILL LOSE ON ONE OR MORE TRADES! We are now going to teach you how to take a loss on a stock which turns against you within a few days after you bought it. If you do not follow these instructions you will fail as a Stock Trader and possibly become an investor, hoping the stock goes back up in the weeks or months to come. In fact it may never go back up.

#1. Always place a stop loss (market) alert in your broker execution program of at least 10% of the price of the stock after purchase. Each broker execution program is different and you should study your broker execution program IN DEPTH to make sure you are placing this alert properly. This is the biggest mistake all NEW Stock Traders make, not understanding how to execute a stock trade using their broker execution program!

#2. If alerts (Stop Loss) are properly set-up and executed you should not lose the difference between the price you bought the stock at and the price you indicated as your stop market.

"Minimize Your Risks & Maximize Your Gains"!

    #8. Do Not Chase!

At the beginning you will miss a lot of GREAT PROFIT OPPORTUNITIES and become very frustrated seeing those stocks run for 1 to 10 points. DO NOT give up or deviate from this rule as eventually you will learn how to catch those fast moving stocks!

If you have determined your entry and initial execution price is $20 and you have missed that price using a "LIMIT ORDER" DO NOT FOLLOW A STOCK UP PAST YOUR INTENDED EXECUTION PRICE!!!

There are exceptions and as you learn how a stock moves and reacts to what is called a "Break Away" you may be able to add 1/8 to 1/4 to that entry point but at the beginning "You Must Stick To This Rule Of Not Chasing A Stock"!

    IMPORTANT

If it's easy to catch a stock chances are it will FALL. The odds say, as a rookie, if your first few clicks of that mouse does catch a stock you probably have bought it at the TOP of a move and it will FALL. Be ready to take a small loss and move on.

#9. If You See RED - Do Not Trade!

RED indicates SHORTING opportunities and Rookies should NOT SHORT until they better understand this technique!

If any one of the following three Indicators are WEAK or DOWN (in the RED) do not trade... DOW Jones - NASDAQ - S&P 500 Futures - sit back, relax and LEARN!

"Minimize Your Risks & Maximize Your Gains"!

#10. Do NOT Trade Against The TAPE!

In other words if the market or a stock is trending down DO NOT GO LONG on a stock. If the market or stock is trending Up DO NOT SHORT a stock. The odds are against you if you "Go Against The Tape"!

"Minimize Your Risks & Maximize Your Gains"!

    #11. Use Discretionary Capital Only!

Capital set aside for Housing, Food, & Day-To-Day necessities should NOT be considered for trading!

"Minimize Your Risks & Maximize Your Gains"!

    #12. Diversify!

This rule is more for those who choose to build and hold a stock portfolio over-night. No more than 20% of your funds into one stock!

The magic number for diversification is FIVE (5) and you will learn if you are a Day Trader and follow the RULES the number FIVE (5) will present itself on several occasions.

"Minimize Your Risks & Maximize Your Gains"!

#13. Minimize Your Losses - Maximize Your Gains!

Of all the rules you will learn in this lesson this one should be at the TOP of the list!

Most Rookie Day Traders end their new career EARLY because GREED influences their decision making process!

When Day Trading we suggest you minimize your losses and maximize your gains by NOT allowing a stock to lose more that 1/8 or 1/4 once you have purchased it and it decides to correct and go the opposite direction.

Just because we give you a suggested "Stop Loss" on certain stocks does NOT mean you have to wait for these Stop Loss Orders to kick in to exit. As a ROOKIE you MUST minimize your LOSSES by keeping them to 1/8 to 1/4 on each trade or you will be out of business in a short period of time.

    Here's an example....

Using the denominator of FIVE (5)...
    4 losses at .25 with 100 shares = 1.00 point or $100...
    1 winner at 2 with 100 shares = 2 points or $200...
Over-all you would have more losses than gains but you will be $100 ahead...

We have determined if you follow the rule of losing no more than 1/4 point on each trade - after 5 trades - 1 of these 5 trades will show a profit to offset those 4 losses - if properly executed....

Once you have established a good winning portfolio and have a bank roll (especially with what are called RANGERS) you can then take more chances and let the stock RANGE UP and DOWN more and rely on those suggested "Stop Loss Orders" and exit points...

Holding & hoping will not work as a professional Day Trader - you will lose in the long run...

Be mentally prepared to take a loss and move on...

"Minimize Your Risks & Maximize Your Gains"!

    #14. Never get GREEDY

If you have a nice gain take it and move on!

Greed is the major down fall of a rookie and in this business a 1/2 to 1 gain on a RUN is fantastic. Those rookies who get greedy and look for more normally lose!

"Minimize Your Risks & Maximize Your Gains"!

    #15. Do NOT over trade!

If you're having a bad day - over trading will not guarantee you can turn that bad day into a good day! If you are having a good day - over trading will not necessarily guarantee your continued success!

We have determined a maximum number of trades per day (on an average trading day) are ONLY 4! There is a trading window of about 1 1/2 to 2 hours a day for perfect "Set-Ups" and you can only squeeze in about 4 trades in this time frame. Any more and you will be doing what we call "Forcing A Trade"!

Forcing trades can bring down your percentage of success and exposes you to high risk...

"Minimize Your Risks & Maximize Your Gains"!

    #16. As A Day Trader Never Hold Stock(s) Over-Night!

The most risky time for Day Traders is the last 15 minutes before the close (345 pm EST). The last hour is very uncertain for the direction of stocks but the last 15 minutes is critical. If you are Day Trading, the end of the trading day is fast approaching and you still have an OPEN STOCK DO NOT HOLD THAT STOCK OVER-NIGHT!

After hours and pre-market can be very tricky so make sure you sell all open trades before close and never trade pre or after market..

Pre & After Market Trading Strategies:

Rookies should not consider trading pre or after market but why?...

Those who have the fortitude to trade pre and after market must study this lesson.   To learn more about Pre & After Market Trading Strategies and how they work click here, Trading Time Frames.  Here is some of what you learn....

#17. Rookies Should Stop Trading At 11:00 am EST!

Most of the easy profits are captured between 9:30 AM EST and 11:00 AM EST and from there on the odds say your risk is extremely high if you keep trading.

For a Rookie - after 11:00 AM EST should be for study and learning and NOT for trading using REAL MONEY!

"Minimize Your Risks & Maximize Your Gains"!

    #18. 2 Losses = Quit!

As a Rookie if you experience 2 losses QUIT and wait for the next trading day!

"Minimize Your Risks & Maximize Your Gains"!

#19. One Trade On One Run!

Greed again enters into this very important rule. A Rookie has a tendency to keep CHASING a stock on a NICE run up or down once they have experienced a nice profit on the first trade. If you learn nothing else from this lesson you must learn to be satisfied with one trade on one run.

    Example...

A stock is running up, you get in and make 2 to 3 points. The stock keeps running up after you sell - you are watching and can't stand to see it move up another 5 to 20 points so you get in again - NO - NO - NO! The odds are against you this stock will keep running - be happy with that nice gain and WAIT for the next SET-UP and perfect entry point as you will learn in the Charting Lessons (remember those lessons you were suppose to study the first week in #2 of this lesson) .

Sit on your hands - do not click that mouse - even though the stock may DOUBLE in front of your eyes until you understand how to read a chart!

"Minimize Your Risks & Maximize Your Gains"!

#20. Level II Training Is A Must!

If you are Day Trading make sure you understand how to read Level II before you enter a trade!

To learn more about using Level II and how it works click here, Market Makers & Level II you will have access to the following TIPS...

"Minimize Your Risks & Maximize Your Gains"!

#21. Holding a Stock For More Than 15 Minutes Is Risky!

A truly professional Momentum Day Trader will NOT hold a stock more than 15 minutes NO MATTER WHAT!

The average is from 1 to 5 minutes. If you are trading as instructed you will catch a stock in what is called a MOMENTUM MOVE and that move should ONLY last 1 to 5 minutes. If it slows this should be a signal to SELL. Those who Hold & Hope normally lose.

"Minimize Your Risks & Maximize Your Gains"!

#22. Rookies Should NOT Trade New IPOs!

As a Rookie DO NOT trade or buy Internet IPOs (Initial Public Offerings) or for that matter any new IPOs!! The most dangerous stocks day trading offers are NEW IPOs. If you want a real RUSH try trading these stocks - but be ready to take a major loss for possibly thousands of dollars.

You should study and practice trading IPOs for several weeks to even months before using real money!   To learn more about Trading IPO's, go to IPOguys.com and click on the "Learning Center.

"Minimize Your Risks & Maximize Your Gains"!

#23 Why You Need A MENTOR (Stock Trading Professional STP)!

Mentors play many roles. A Mentor, in the historical sense, is seen as someone who

...is a loyal friend, confidant and advisor
...is a teacher, guide, coach and role model
...is entrusted with the care and education of another
...has knowledge and advanced or expert status and who is attracted to and nurtures a person of talent and ability
...is willing to give away what he or she knows in a non-competitive way represents skill, knowledge, virtue and accomplishment

    The most effective mentors

Welcome newcomers into the profession and take a personal interest in their career development and well-being, want to share their knowledge, materials, skill and experience with those they mentor plus offer support, challenge, patience and enthusiasm while they guide others to new levels of competence, point the way and represent tangible evidence of what one can become, expose the recipients of their mentoring to new ideas, perspectives and standards, and to the values and norms of the profession, are more expert in terms of knowledge but view themselves as equal to those they mentor

    Sharing Experiences

Every mentor has a specific area of professional knowledge and skill to share. To illustrate, in the stock trading profession a part of this knowledge is referred to as "in the trenches." The stock trading mentor’s personal experiences in making and losing money is invaluable to those who have NOT experienced this as of yet. For a mentor to explain how they made or lost 5 points on a trade and how they share this experience with others on a personal one-on-one basis is better than reading about it in some manual.

Experienced Stock Trading Professionals (STP’s) develop a sense of how the market is going. They have traded "in the trenches" and know first hand what it’s like to be a successful Day Trader. As a Rookie Day Trader you can learn more from these veterans than you will ever learn from books, manuals or even this proven Rookie Day Trading System.

    #24 Practice - Practice - Practice!

"Minimize Your Risks & Maximize Your Gains"!

    Summary

Day & Stock Trading is NOT always predictable and when you think you have it figured out it will turn against you. Be ready to take a loss and move on (because you WILL lose on some of these trades!). If you have used a "stop loss order" properly, as explained in the Rookie Day Trading Guide/System, you can minimize your losses and maximize your gains. Using this concept and technique you can be right or wrong 50% of the time and still make money because if you limit your losses to 1/8 - 1/4 and your gains exceed those limits a 50/50 success rate will most always put you ahead!

There’s also a danger of being too successful!

When you have 4 - 5 - 6 successful days in a row you begin to think this is really easy and you lose your FEAR FACTOR. FEAR is GOOD for a successful Day Trader! There ALWAYS will be the NEXT day which will turn against you and without FEAR you forget all you have learned in this Rookie Day Trading System. Make that one fatal mistake - whether it is NOT putting a STOP on a stock or GREED - you will lose. Be emotionally prepared to LOSE by unloading a stock should the market turn or the FEAR FACTOR sets in and you are afraid to enter into an execution because your common sense and your training SAYS NOT TO.

Overseas markets went from bad to worse. Tokyo's Nikkei dropped another 3%, and has now declines 15% over the last month, including 8% this week alone. Markets in India and Norway slumped almost 5% overnight. Taiwan shed 4%, while Korea misplaced 3% of its market value after a surprise rate hike. The fact that Europe's rate hike was expected didn't stop Frankfurt from falling a further 2%.

    Chemical Eye Injuries or Burns

If caustic substances such as acid, chlorine, ammonia, or pesticides enter your eye, Prevent Blindness America recommends that you immediately rinse your eye with a cool liquid that ordinarily would be drinkable. If you are near a faucet with clean, cool running water, put your head under the gentle flow and try flushing your eye. Keep continually flushing the eye for up to 20 minutes or, in severe cases, until you are able to obtain emergency medical care.

Contact lenses should be removed only after the eye is flushed out.

    Eye Bleeding

Never apply pressure to a bleeding eyeball. Gently cover the eye with a clean cloth or cold compress, and seek medical help immediately.

    Eye Trauma

    Imbedded Object in Eye

Never try to remove an imbedded object such as a fishhook in the eye.

Leave the object in place and try shielding the eye by taping on the bottom half of a paper cup or similar object until medical care is available. Minimize eye movement and possible further damage by covering both eyes. Never attempt to wash out an eye in which an object has been imbedded.

    Eye Out of Socket

Never try to place an eye back in the socket on your own. Place a moist, clean covering over the dislodged eye, and gently cover both eyes to prevent eye movement and further eye damage until medical help can be obtained.

    Other Serious Eye Trauma

On your way to the emergency room or while awaiting an ambulance, make sure both eyes are covered or gently bandaged to prevent further damage from eye movement. Never rub your eyes.

    Retinal Detachment

A retinal detachment can be preceded by sudden onset of vision loss such as a dark curtain appearing across the field of vision. Flashing lights also might be noticed. These symptoms can mean that a light-sensitive area in the back of the eye (retina) is partially or completely pulling away from blood vessels necessary for providing nutrients to maintain the health of this all-important eye structure.

A sharp blow to the head sometimes precedes a retinal detachment, which is a fairly common eye emergency. To prevent blindness, your best course of action is to seek medical help as soon as possible so that the retina can be surgically reattached and vision restored. If you delay too long, the retina may become permanently damaged.

Sudden Rise in Internal Eye Pressure (Intraocular Pressure)

If you have sudden onset of blurry vision, eye pain, and eye redness along with possible symptoms such as nausea, you might have a serious eye emergency accompanying an increase in internal eye pressure (intraocular pressure). As with retinal detachments, your best remedy is to seek medical attention immediately.

These eye symptoms can be associated with closed-angle glaucoma, a disease that can damage the optic nerve and cause blindness.

It's the most stunning development in agricultural markets today -- I can't think of anything else quite like this," says Keith Collins, the U.S. Agriculture Department's chief economist.

The amount of corn used for ethanol, estimated at 2.15 billion bushels this year, would amount to about 20 percent of the nation's entire crop, according to department projections.

Even as ethanol devours corn and pushes prices higher, the president and Congress are calling for even greater ethanol use. Wall Street cannot seem to get enough of ethanol-related investments. Automakers are speeding ethanol-capable vehicles onto the road.

Yet the ethanol industry is not without its critics, who question whether tax incentives provided by Congress are really needed.

The enthusiasm for ethanol makes farmer Lynn Phillips want to grow more corn. Phillips helped raise the money for the farmer-owned Tall Corn plant, which opened in 2002 as a way to make more money by processing every kernel of locally grown corn.

"We saw train cars after train cars of raw material being shipped away and value being added somewhere else," said Phillips. Now, the corn "is still going out on train cars -- it's just going out in the form of ethanol and distillers' grain."

Corn can cost more to grow because it needs heavy applications of fertilizer. Right now, Phillips plants corn on about half his 2,000 acres and soybeans on the rest.

Inside the ethanol plant, corn is ground and mixed with water to make mash. It is heated and mixed with enzymes to convert starch into sugar and fermented with yeast to make alcohol -- just like making moonshine. Hanging in the air around the 500,000-gallon fermenting tanks is the smell of sweet, white wine.

The mixture is kept just below 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Yeast seem happier below that temperature, general manager Owen Shunkwiler hollers over the hum. Shunkwiler works for South Dakota-based Broin Companies, which invested in Tall Corn and is responsible for its operations.

After fermentation, the mixture is boiled to remove water, then dehydrated to boost the alcohol content. Before leaving the plant, a denaturant, or poison, is added to make the alcohol unfit for drinking. Then the ethanol is ready for shipping to fuel storage terminals that will blend it with gasoline as it goes into trucks for distribution to gas stations.

Also yielded in the process is livestock feed. Corn kernels minus the starch are left over -- think South Beach for cows. Every 56-pound bushel makes about 17.4 pounds of grain feed, according to the Agriculture Department.

Tall Corn produces 150,000 gallons of ethanol each day, enough to power an estimated 272 cars for an entire year if they ran on ethanol alone.

But automobiles do not run on pure ethanol. Instead, ethanol is combined with unleaded gasoline to boost its octane rating and reduce emissions.

The most common blends are 10 percent ethanol, approved for any make or model sold in the U.S., or 85 percent ethanol, known as E-85 and used in specially made flexible fuel vehicles. About 5 million vehicles in the U.S. can run on E-85; more are in production.

In Iowa in April, regular unleaded gasoline was selling for $2.71, E-10 for $2.65 and E-85 for $2.33.

With demand comes expansion. In Iowa alone, three new ethanol plants opened last month. The industry likely will outpace a mandate from Congress to pump out 7.5 billion gallons a year by 2012, according to Collins.

Meanwhile, lawmakers envision vastly more ethanol in the nation's automobiles. Sens. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, and Richard Lugar, R-Ind., are pushing to require 60 billion gallons of ethanol and soy-based biodiesel by 2030.

An expansion that big would require sources for ethanol besides corn. Ethanol is made from sugar cane in Brazil, which meets about half its fuel demand with ethanol. Sorghum, another feed grain, accounts for about 3 percent of U.S. ethanol, according to the Agriculture Department.

Research is under way on other potential sources, such wood fibers and residue from crop harvesting.

The big question is whether oil and gas will remain expensive.

"When the price of anything gets high enough, then all kinds of substitutes come out of the closet," Collins said. "That's what's going on now. As long as the price of oil stays high, where ethanol is profitable, this industry is going to keep growing

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that can develop in some people after exposure to a terrifying event or ordeal in which grave physical harm occurred or was threatened. PTSD can occur in people of any age, including children and adolescents.

In the past, PTSD had been associated with the violence of modern combat. However, it’s now understood that many people other than combat soldiers are susceptible. PTSD can result from many kinds of tragic incidents in which the individual was a witness, victim, or survivor, including violent or personal attacks, natural or human-caused disasters, or accidents.

Symptoms of PTSD can include re-experience of the trauma; emotional numbness; avoidance of people, places, and thoughts connected to the event; and arousal, which may include trouble sleeping, exaggerated startle response, and hyper-vigilance.

Helping Those Who Suffer from PTSD and Drug Abuse

Health care professionals must be alert to the fact that PTSD frequently co-occurs with depression, anxiety disorders, and alcohol or other substance abuse. Individuals who are experiencing the symptoms of PTSD need support from physicians and health care providers.
The likelihood of treatment success increases when these concurrent disorders are appropriately identified and treated as well.

In some cases, medications such as the antidepressant sertraline (Zoloft™), have been shown to be helpful in treating patients who suffer from PTSD and substance use disorders.

Some reports suggest that successful detoxification of these comorbid individuals will likely require inpatient admission to permit vigorous control of withdrawal and PTSD-related arousal symptoms.

Although there is no standardized, effective treatment developed for individuals with this disorder, studies show that those who suffer from PTSD can improve with cognitive behavioral therapy, group therapy, or exposure therapy, in which the individual gradually and repeatedly relives the frightening experience under controlled conditions to help him or her work through the trauma.

Exposure therapy is thought to be one of the most effective ways to manage PTSD when it is conducted by a trained therapist. It has not yet been widely used with comorbid disorders, but recent studies suggest that some individuals with PTSD and comorbid cocaine addiction can be successfully treated with exposure therapy. Individuals in a recent study who suffered from both disorders showed significant reductions in all PTSD symptoms and in overall cocaine use.

Finally, support from family and friends can play an important role in recovery.

This weekend we honor and commemorate all those who gave their lives in battle so that we could experience freedom in this country. Many fought bravely throughout history and paid the price so that we wouldn't have to. How grateful we are that they willingly laid down their lives so that we could live in this great nation.

The greatest freedom in history is available because Jesus Christ was willing to lay his life down. He willingly paid the price so that you could experience freedom in every area of your life.

God bless the men and women of the armed forces—and their families—on this Memorial Day.

I have a friend who is president of his homeowner's association down in
Washington. They are having a terrible problem with trash on the side of the
road that is around his association's homes. The reason according to Wallace
(my friend) is, there is being built just next to them, six new homes.....
big ones! Wallace said the trash is coming from the Mexican work
crews working at the construction sites. (McDonald Bags, Burger King trash,
etc). He has pleaded with the site supervisors and the general contractor to
no avail, called the City,County, the Police and got no help.
So..................guess what some people in his community did?

They organized about twenty folks, named themselves The "Inner Neighborhood
Services" to go out at lunch time and "police" the trash themselves. It is
what they did while picking up the trash that is HILARIOUS !!!!!!!!

They got some navy blue baseball caps and had the initials "INS" in gold put
on the caps. It doesn't take a rocket scientist, however, to understand what
they hoped people would think it means.

Well the day after their first pick up detail, with them wearing their caps
and some carrying cameras; 46 out of 68, of the construction workers did not
show up for work the next morning!!!!!!!!.............and haven't come back
yet!!!!! It has been ten days.

Now the General Contractor, I understand is madder than hell, but can't say
anything publicly, because he could be busted for hiring "illegal aliens".
Wallace and his bunch can't be accused of impersonating INS folks, because
they have it on their home owner association records the vote to form the
new committee within their association, plus they informed the INS about
what they were doing in advance, and the INS said basically according to
    Wallace.............."have at it"!

SO FOLKS, I THINK YOU COULD SAY THAT YANKEE INGENUITY TRIUMPHS
    AGAIN!!!!!!!

A semi-accurate depiction of the helium atom. In the nucleus, the protons are in pink and neutrons are in purple. In reality, the nucleus is also spherically symmetric.

The nucleus of an atom is the very dense region in its center consisting of protons and neutrons. The size of the nucleus is much smaller than the size of the atom itself, and almost all of the mass in an atom is made up from the protons and neutrons with almost no contribution from the electrons.

    Contents

    [hide]

    Nuclear makeup

The nucleus of an atom consists of very tightly bound protons and neutrons. The electromagnetic force which causes like charges to repel prevents protons from binding together without neutrons (it would blow such a nucleus apart). When neutrons and protons are in very close range, they are held together by the strong nuclear force. The strong force is much much stronger than gravity or the electromagnetic force, but because it only works over very short distances (as opposed to gravity and electromagnetism which have infinite range) we don't usually notice it in everyday life. Hydrogen is the only element which contains no neutrons in its nucleus; the hydrogen nucleus consists of one proton. The stable form of helium, the next lightest element, has two protons and two neutrons. Most of the light elements are stable when they have roughly even numbers of protons and neutrons, but as elements get heavier and heavier they need more neutrons to stay together.

    Isotopes

The isotope of an atom is determined by the number of neutrons in the nucleus. Different isotopes of the same element have very similar chemical properties because chemical reactions depend almost entirely on the number of electrons that an atom has. Different isotopes in a sample of a particular chemical can be separated by using a centrifuge or by using a spectrometer. The first method is used in producing enriched uranium from a sample of regular uranium, and the second is used in carbon dating.

The number of protons and neutrons together determine the nuclide (type of nucleus). Protons and neutrons have nearly equal masses, and their combined number, the mass number, is approximately equal to the atomic mass of an atom. The combined mass of the electrons is very small in comparison to the mass of the nucleus, since protons and neutrons weigh roughly 2000 times more than electrons.

    Nuclear decay

If a nucleus has too few or too many neutrons it may be unstable, and will decay after some period of time. For example, nitrogen-16 atoms (7 protons, 9 neutrons) beta decay to oxygen-16 atoms (8 protons, 8 neutrons) within a few seconds of being created. In this decay a neutron in the nitrogen nucleus is turned into a proton and an electron by the weak nuclear force. The element of the atom changes because while it previously had seven protons (which makes it nitrogen) it now has eight (which makes it oxygen). Many elements have multiple isotopes which are stable for weeks, years, or even billions of years.

    Nucleus size

The radius of a nucleon (neutron or proton) is of the order of 1 fm (femtometre = 10-15 m). The nuclear radius, which can be approximated by the cubic root of the mass number times 1.2 fm, is less than 0.01 % (1/10,000th) of the radius of the atom. Thus the density of the nucleus is more than a trillion times that of the atom as a whole. One solid cubic millimeter of nuclear material, if compressed together, would have a mass of around 200,000 tonnes. Neutron stars are composed of such material.

    History

The discovery of the electron was the first indication that the atom had internal structure. At the turn of the 20th century the accepted model of the atom was J. J. Thomson's "plum pudding" model in which the atom was a large positively charged ball with small negatively charged electrons embedded inside of it. By the turn of the century physicists had also discovered three types of radiation coming from atoms, which they named alpha, beta, and gamma radiation. Experiments in 1911 by Lise Meitner and Otto Hahn, and by James Chadwick in 1914 discovered that the beta decay spectrum was continuous rather than discrete. That is, electrons were ejected from the atom with a range of energies, rather than the discrete amounts of energies that were observed in gamma and alpha decays. This was a problem for nuclear physics at the time, because it indicated that energy was not conserved in these decays. The problem would later lead to the discovery of the neutrino (see below).

Around the same time that this was happening (1911) Ernest Rutherford performed a remarkable experiment in which Hans Geiger and Ernest Marsden under his supervision fired alpha particles (helium nuclei) at a thin film of gold foil. The plum pudding model predicted that the alpha particles should come out of the foil with their trajectories being at most slightly bent. He was shocked to discover that many particles were scattered through large angles, even completely backwards in some cases. The discovery led to the Rutherford model of the atom, in which the atom has a very small, very dense nucleus consisting of heavy positively charged particles with embedded electrons in order to balance out the charge. As an example, in this model nitrogen-14 consisted of a nucleus with 14 protons and 7 electrons, and the nucleus was surrounded by 7 more orbiting electrons.

The Rutherford model worked quite well until studies of nuclear spin were carried out by Franco Rasetti at the California Institute of Technology in 1929. By 1925 it was known that protons and electrons had a spin of 1/2, and in the Rutherford model of nitrogen-14 the 14 protons and six of the electrons should have paired up to cancel each others spin, and the final electron should have left the nucleus with a spin of 1/2. Rasetti discovered, however, that nitrogen-14 has a spin of one.

In 1930 Wolfgang Pauli was unable to attend a meeting in Tubingen, and instead sent a famous letter with the classic introduction "Dear Radioactive Ladies and Gentlemen". In his letter Pauli suggested that perhaps there was a third particle in the nucleus which he named the "neutron". He suggested that it was very light (lighter than an electron), had no charge, and that it did not readily interact with matter (which is why it hadn't yet been detected). This desperate way out solved both the problem of energy conservation and the spin of nitrogen-14, the first because Pauli's "neutron" was carrying away the extra energy and the second because an extra "neutron" paired off with the electron in the nitrogen-14 nucleus giving it spin one. Pauli's "neutron" was renamed the neutrino (Italian for little neutral one) by Enrico Fermi in 1931, and after about thirty years it was finally demonstrated that a neutrino really is emitted during beta decay.

In 1932 Chadwick realized that radiation that had been observed by Walther Bothe, Herbert Becker, Irène and Frédéric Joliot-Curie was actually due to a massive particle that he called the neutron. In the same year Dmitrij Iwanenko suggested that neutrons were in fact spin 1/2 particles and that the nucleus contained neutrons and that there were no electrons in it, and Francis Perrin suggested that neutrinos were not nuclear particles but were created during beta decay. To cap the year off, Fermi submitted a theory of the neutrino to Nature (which the editors rejected for being "too remote from reality"). Fermi continued working on his theory and published a paper in 1934 which placed the neutrino on solid theoretical footing. In the same year Hideki Yukawa proposed the first significant theory of the strong force to explain how the nucleus holds together.

With Fermi and Yukawa's papers the modern model of the atom was complete. The centre of the atom contains a tight ball of neutrons and protons, which is held together by the strong nuclear force. Unstable nuclei may undergo alpha decay, in which they emit an energetic helium nuclei, or beta decay, in which they eject an electron (or positron). After one of these decays the resultant nucleus may be left in an excited state, and in this case it decays to its ground state by emitting high energy photons (gamma decay).

The study of the strong and weak nuclear forces led physicists to collide nuclei and electrons at ever higher energies. This research became the science of particle physics, the crown jewel of which is the standard model of particle physics which unifies the strong, weak, and electromagnetic forces.

    Nuclear fusion

    Main article: Nuclear fusion

When two light nuclei come into very close contact with each other it is possible for the strong force to fuse the two together. It takes a great deal of energy to push the nuclei close enough together for the strong force to have an effect, so the process of nuclear fusion can only take place at very high temperatures or high densities. Once the nuclei are close enough together the strong force overcomes their electromagnetic repulsion and squishes them into a new nucleus. A very large amount of energy is released when light nuclei fuse together because the binding energy per nucleon increases with mass number up until nickel-62. Stars like our sun are powered by the fusion of four protons into a helium nucleus, two positrons, and two neutrinos. The uncontrolled fusion of hydrogen into helium is known as a thermonuclear weapon. Research to find an economically viable method of using energy from a controlled fusion reaction is currently being undertaken by various research establishments (see JET and ITER).

    Nuclear fission

    Main article: Nuclear fission

For nuclei heavier than nickel-62 the binding energy per nucleon decreases with the mass number. It is therefore possible for energy to be released if a heavy nucleus breaks apart into two lighter ones. This splitting of atoms is known as nuclear fission.

The process of alpha decay may be thought of as a special type of spontaneous nuclear fission. This process produces a highly assymetrical fission because the four particles which make up the alpha particle are especially tightly bound to each other, making production of this nucleus in fission particularly likely.

For certain of the heaviest nuclei which produce neutrons on fission, and which also easily absorb neutrons to initiate fission, a self-igniting type of neutron-initiated fission can be obtained, in a so-called chain reaction. [Chain reactions were known in chemistry before physics, and in fact many familiar processes like fires and chemical explosions are chemical chain reactions]. The fission or "nuclear" chain-reaction, using fission-produced neutrons, is the source of energy for nuclear power plants and fission type nuclear bombs such as the two that the United States used against Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II. Heavy nuclei such as uranium and thorium may undergo spontaneous nuclear fission, but they are much more likely to undergo decay by alpha decay.

For a neutron-initiated chain-reaction to occur, there must be a critical mass of the element present in a certain space under certain conditions (these conditions slow and conserve neutrons for the reactions). There is one known example of a natural nuclear fission reactor, which was active in two regions of Oklo, Gabon, Africa, over 1.5 billion years ago. Measurements of natural neutrino emission have demonstrated at around half of the heat emmanating from the earth's core, results from radioactive decay. However, it is not known if any of this results from fission chain-reactions.

    Production of heavy elements

As the Universe cooled after the big bang it eventually became possible for particles as we know them to exist. The most common particles created in the big bang which are still easily observable to us today were protons (hydrogen) and electrons (in equal numbers). Some heavier elements were created as the protons collided with each other, but most of the heavy elements we see today were created inside of stars during a series of fusion stages, such as the proton-proton chain, the CNO cycle and the triple-alpha process. Progressively heavier elements are created during the evolution of a star. Since the binding energy per nucleon peaks around iron, energy is only released in fusion processes occurring below this point. Since the creation of heavier nuclei by fusion costs energy, nature resorts to the process of neutron capture. Neutrons (due to their lack of charge) are readily absorbed by a nucleus. The heavy elements are created by either a slow neutron capture process (the so-called s process) or by the rapid, or r process. The s process occurs in thermally pulsing stars (called AGB, or asymptotic giant branch stars) and takes hundreds to thousands of years to reach the heaviest elements of lead and bismuth. The r process is thought to occur in supernova explosions due to the fact that the conditions of high temperature, high neutron flux and ejected matter are present. These stellar conditions make the successive neutron captures very fast, involving very neutron-rich species which then beta-decay to heavier elements, especially at the so-called waiting points that correspond to more stable nuclides with closed neutron shells (magic numbers). The r process duration is typically in the range of a few seconds.

    Nuclear physics

A heavy nucleus can contain hundreds of nucleons (neutrons and protons), which means that to some approximation it can be treated as a classical system, rather than a quantum-mechanical one. In the resulting liquid-drop model, the nucleus has an energy which arises partly from surface tension and partly from electrical repulsion of the protons. The liquid-drop model is able to reproduce many features of nuclei, including the general trend of binding energy with respect to mass number, as well as the phenomenon of nuclear fission.

Superimposed on this classical picture, however, are quantum-mechanical effects, which can be described using the nuclear shell model, developed in large part by Maria Goeppert-Mayer. Nuclei with certain numbers of neutrons and protons (the magic numbers 2, 8, 20, 50, 82, 126, ...) are particularly stable, because their shells are filled.

Much of current research in nuclear physics relates to the study of nuclei under extreme conditions such as high spin and excitation energy. Nuclei may also have extreme shapes (similar to that of American footballs) or extreme neutron-to-proton ratios. Experimenters can create such nuclei using artificially induced fusion or nucleon transfer reactions, employing ion beams from an accelerator. Beams with even higher energies can be used to create nuclei at very high temperatures, and there are signs that these experiments have produced a phase transition from normal nuclear matter to a new state, the quark-gluon plasma, in which the quarks mingle with one another, rather than being segregated in triplets as they are in neutrons and protons.

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? (1967) A liberal white couple put their platitudes to the test. They always taught their daughter that all people are created equal, regardless of race or religion... until she unexpectedly brings home a black doctor and announces that they're engaged.

The Graduate (1967) is a satirical coming-of-age comedy that became an emotional touchstone for an entire generation.

Midnight Cowboy (1969) is an ultra-realistic film with sordid, downbeat and serious content. It portrays the unlikely companionship and poignant tragic drama of two homeless, down-and-out anti-hero drifters who are powerfully bonded together.

The Apartment (1960) is a classic bittersweet, heart-rending comedy/drama about a compliant insurance clerk who secretly lends out his apartment to company executives for adulterous sexual affairs and liaisons.

Elmer Gantry (1960) This biting portrait of the business of religion was highly innovative at the time of its release, casting a slightly tarnished light on the hustle and theatrics of traveling ministries, while analyzing the true nature of faith and redemption.

The Miracle Worker (1962) This outstanding movie is based on the true story of two of the great figures of American history, Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan.

Cool Hand Luke (1967) is the moving character study of a non-conformist; anti-hero loner who bull headedly resists authority and the Establishment.

Marty (1955) is the poignant, simple character study of a lonely, unmarried, lovelorn middle-aged son who still lives with his love-smothering mother.

Friendly Persuasion  (1956) has sweep and majesty and pathos. It shows not just the tragedy of war, but also the problem of pacifism, the nobility of patriotism, as well as the love of peace.

Massoud review of best books ever written .
I know that some of you do not have the same access as the people of free world do but few weeks ago that I was visiting
the Namayeshgah Ketab , I noticed there were many people that wanted to read & not there for  the school books that were going at the rate of  30% discount
Please check out these books and let me know what do you think
I have to inform my readers that I have not read all of these but are on my list any way

Here is an archive of unexpurgated opinion and enthusiastic personal recommendations for some of  books of the past 75 years.

Against All Odds by Dr. John Sperling, the founder, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Apollo Group, Inc. and the University of Phoenix. Against All Odds is one of the most inspiring books that I’ve ever read. My favorite quote by Dr. Sperling about traditional higher education is as follows: “…They will use the law, they will use regulations, they will use every technique they can, to protect their market. That's the way the world operates…”

The Power of Purpose  is by Richard Leider. Can there be more to life than just going to work everyday and doing your job? Is there work that is unique to you? Is there a job that you are uniquely called to do? In The Power of Purpose, Richard Leider provides a practical process for answering these questions and creating a life filled with meaning and passion. The Power of Purpose helps all of us to define purpose and calling with remarkable new dimension in our own lives. It is a significant book.

The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale, was translated into fifteen languages with more than 7 million copies sold, The Power of Positive Thinking is unparalleled in its extraordinary capacity for restoring the faltering faith of millions. In this insightful program,

The True Believer by Eric Hoffer is a highly provocative, analysis of the fanatic -- the individual compelled to join a cause, any cause -- and a penetrating study of mass movements from early Christianity to modern nationalism and Communism.

Caesar and Christ: A History of Roman Civilization and of Christianity from Their Beginnings to A.D. 325 (Story of Civilization, No 3) by Will Durant. This title is one of my favorites in the Story of Civilization series.

The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany by William L. Shirer offers an unparalleled and thrillingly told examination of how Adolf Hitler nearly succeeded in conquering the world. With millions of copies in print around the globe, it has attained the status of a vital and enduring classic.

Business Research Methods.  By William Zikmund, introduces the reader to research designs commonly used in business decision-making, i.e. survey, observation, data analysis, sampling, and quasi-experiments as they relate to the analysis and proposed solutions of real problems in the organizational setting.

The Law in Quest of Itself by Lon L. Fuller. The book opened up for me a wholly new world. It introduced matters that were deeper and more intellectually stimulating than anything I had previously encountered in my college courses.

BAR EXAM SURVIVAL KIT by Jeff Adachi, Esq. who writes a definitive guide on how to successfully pass the Bar Examination in California

. I believe my sweet wife would enjoy reading this book even though I have not read it yet but have heard a lot about it

Nailing the Bar  by Tim Tyler, Ph.D., Attorney at Law,

This is from my immediate supervisor ( a  low class racist red neck with no education & job knowledge ).
Decent  people do not like to manage work places run by Nazis organizations and follow the foot steps of Gestapo's ,but  here I am , a minority with middle eastern background stuck to a chair at a torch or chamber called computer room monitoring their cash flow with their sophisticated machines but must flow their rules
